About Emily’s quotation

Emily Dickinson

Dear readers,

I have placed a quotation by Emily Dickinson

on the top right side of  a post on this blog,

in which she stated, in a letter to

Thomas Higginson, on April 26, 1862,

that she never read Whitman’s book

and was told that it was disgraceful.

I was always very curious about

what she thought of Whitman,

and when I found out her opinion

of him, I decided to show it on this blog.

As she is the only poet in North-American Literature

(at least according to Harold Bloom‘s point of view)

who can be placed side by side with Whitman,

I thought it fair to quote her here on this subject.

If you want to read the letter she mentions Whitman

and others, please visit this page.

Kind regards,

Gentil Saraiva Junior
